Wineries Unlimited 2009 Announces Silent and Live Auctions to benefit scholarship programs of the ASEV's Eastern Section

Santa Rosa, California (December 11, 2008) -- Wineries Unlimited 2009, the largest vineyard and winery tradeshow and conference east of the Rocky Mountains, announces Silent and Live Auctions to benefit the scholarship program of the American Society of Enology and Viticulture's eastern section. Produced by Vineyard & Winery Management magazine (www.vwm-online.com), Wineries Unlimited takes place March 10-13, 2009 at the Valley Forge Convention Center (www.vfconventioncenter.com) in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania in suburban Philadelphia.

"ASEV/ES is the backbone of the research that has generated an explosion of winery growth and quality in the East over the last few decades," said Robert Merletti, event producer and president/publisher of Vineyard & Winery Management magazine. "It is important that we support them financially to make scholarships available for our future researchers. A donation to this auction is an investment in our industry's longevity and security."

The Silent Auction is conducted on the floor of the two-day trade show while the Live Auction is held at the Best of the East Grand Tasting and Gala, a celebration that features gold and double-gold medal winners from the 2008 International Eastern Wine Competition. Items up to $399 in value are tagged for the Silent Auction; donations over $400 qualify for the Live Auction.

The Sonoma State University Wine Business Program donated a short course (June 18-20, 2009) in Wine Entrepreneurship that includes four nights of accommodations. The coursework covers finance, marketing, business strategy, and business plan writing. A Live Auction item, the estimated retail value of the package is $2,000.

Gusmer Enterprises, Inc. contributed the Illustrated Guide to Microbes and Sediments in Wine, Beer and Juice to the Silent Auction. With an estimated retail value of $125, the book is considered a "must have" for microscopic examination and tentative identification of microorganisms and sediments in beverages.

Nearly $18,000 was raised during the Silent and Live Auctions of Wineries Unlimited 2008, surpassing the 2007 record of $16,000.

The 2008 scholarship recipients were Craig Austin (Cornell), Denise Gardner (Virginia Tech), Michelle Moyer (Cornell), Jim Willwerth (Brock), Molly Kelly (Virginia Tech), James Meyers (Cornell), Jeff Wheeler (Southern Illinois), Dena Fiacchino (Purdue) and Lisa Wasko (Iowa State).

Individuals interested in contributing auction items should contact Leda Wagner at 800.535.5670 ext. 106.

Attendees of Wineries Unlimited may register for a variety of packages via www.wineriesunlimited.com or obtain general information at 800.535.5670 ext. 100. Early-bird discounts apply through January 30, 2009 while conference highlights follow.

Keynote Speaker Announced for Wineries Unlimited 2009
Karen Ross to Deliver: "The Benefits of Sustainability for Neighbor and Customer Relations"

Santa Rosa, California (November 18, 2008) -- Karen Ross, president of the California Assn of Winegrape Growers (CAWG), will be the keynote speaker at Wineries Unlimited 2009, the largest vineyard and winery tradeshow and conference east of the Rocky Mountains. The annual event is produced by Vineyard & Winery Management magazine (www.vwm-online.com), and takes place March 10-13, 2009 at the Valley Forge Convention Center (www.vfconventioncenter.com) in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania in suburban Philadelphia.

With the CAWG (www.cawg.org) since 1996, Ross will deliver her keynote address "The Benefits of Sustainability for Neighbor and Customer Relations" on Wednesday, March 11 at the Wine Theme Luncheon in accord with the conference theme of "Sustainability in the East".

"We asked Karen to address the positive impact of sustainability on relationships with vineyard and winery neighbors," said Richard Leahy, chairman of Wineries Unlimited.

"Sustainable viticulture preserves the land for future generations," explains Karen Ross of CAWG. "In addition, lowering vineyard inputs reduces overhead while transitioning from conventional to sustainable farming can win friends with consumers who are looking to support green products. Many people, especially Millennials, know their buying habits influence businesses, so environmental responsibility gives them another reason to practice brand loyalty."

Ross is also the executive director of the Winegrape Growers of America and the executive director of the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation. She serves on the USDA-USTR Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee and the California State Board of Food and Agriculture, and is a frequent public speaker representing the wine industry and its Sustainable Winegrowing Program.

She was honored with the Wine Industry Integrity Award in October 2008 for nearly two decades as "the voice, conscience and prime advocate" for California's grape growers, and has been instrumental in the development of California's sustainable winegrowing program.
